Meet Eos: The Greek Goddess of the Dawn
The inspiration for my logo, Eos and her story resonates throughout my being. This beautiful sculpture of Eos is located in my home city, Columbus, IN, and I’ve been fascinated with her for many years. Read on to see why...

Eos rose each morning from her home, raised her forearms and opened the gates of heaven for the Sun (her brother - Helios) to pass and rise. Her other sibling is Selene, Goddess of the Moon. In Greek Mythology, Eos had the power to bring the gift of light: the morning sky and the rising dawn.
It is such a small thing she does, opening the gates. And yet, that one small act brings life and hope to a suffering world. What must her morning look like? Maybe on some mornings she drags herself out of bed and throws on a robe: awake before all others in a land of dark and cold. With bleary eyes, she stumbles to the Gates of Heaven and opens it so that her loud, bright, and shiny brother can pass right on through without even a 'How do ya do?.' Yet, everyday she gets up and completes her task. Why does she do this?
I would imagine a godly sense of duty to keep us mortals alive another day. Who can truly say when it comes to the Gods. But, I know I can certainly see myself in a morning like that. Getting up everyday; barely keeping it together. Feeling overwhelmed and exhausted the minute I got up, just to slog through day, sleep, and do it all over again.
That's when I started to look at Eos from a different perspective. I saw how dedication to her 'why' lead to hope, light, and life. That is why I chose her likeness to put within my logo.
Eos represents every facet of my business:
- I’m an earth sign – you can see that Eos is still connected to the earth with her roots
- Each one of us has the opportunity, every single day, to rise and open our gates
- She represents all of us rising out of the mire when we’re stuck, to claim our greatness and strength
- Eos embodies my purpose – for you to rise up to claim your greatness while staying connected to your roots to remind you where you’re from
I hope EOS's story resonates with you the way it has with me.

Early Life
I hail from Indiana, growing up on our family farm. My journey took a unique turn when I was hospitalized at four months old and put in an oxygen tent for what was potentially a heart attack or pneumonia. When I was three years old, my parents started taking me to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, where after several years and many medical tests, I was finally diagnosed with two (2) heart defects. At age six, I underwent pioneering open-heart surgery, making me one of the first children to do so. This experience fueled my determination to live life to the fullest, promising myself to never miss out on anything again.
While that was wonderful, there was also a powerful aftermath of emotions and life-long issues stemming from my experiences for me to contend with. Understandably for a child so young, not all of those emotions were positive and many of my experiences adversely impacted my self-worth. Many years later, I examined these experiences and was able to understand what had happened and how it had affected my life. Then I finally was able to conquer the disempowering feelings.
Career Journey
Armed with a master's degree in education from Indiana University, I kicked off my career as an elementary teacher. Life threw challenges my way, including miscarriages and the loss of a child, but I eventually embraced motherhood. Despite sudden divorce, I persevered.
After a year of unemployment, I joined Ivy Tech Community College, implementing the Carl D. Perkins Act to support underprivileged students. Recognizing the childcare roadblock, I pioneered onsite daycare years before it became common.
My journey continued with The Even Start Family Literacy Program, addressing poverty and illiteracy. When the grant ended, I transitioned to global manufacturing organizations, starting with Cummins. My journey then took me to Knauf Insulation of North America, where I was the first ever female Director, responsible for shaping Human Resources and Organization Development, fostering performance improvement.
Nearly two decades in the corporate world led me to create my business, Making Performance Matter® (MPM). As the founding President and CEO, I guide entrepreneurs and leaders to translate strategy into action, so they are able to connect employee performance with business results.
My Personal Shift
A secret passion fueled my career - writing a book to guide women in creating breakthroughs. In 2022, The Shift Café® - How to STEP into the POWER of your POTENTIAL. was published, driven by my unique Shift Café system.
After part of my heart story was included in The Shift Café book (I had refused to even talk about these experiences for so many years), I decided to embrace my heart story. I now speak on 'The Power of Determination: How a Little Girl Stomped Her Foot and Saved Her Life". And my story has been shared through the American Heart Association, Indiana University (IU) Health, and in various news outlets.
Beyond my professional life, I've served as President of the Board of Directors for Youth Empowered, Inc., promoted racial justice in my church and contributed to the resettlement of Afghanistan refugees. As a political activist, I encourage Indiana women to engage in their communities.
Home is where the heart is, and mine is split between Columbus, Indiana, and Green Valley, Arizona, with my husband Tim and our little dog, Griffin. Additionally, my brother Doug and I own Winn Family Farms LLC in Shelby County, Indiana.
